Grewia asiatica Linn. from Hooghly:
Attaching images of Grewia asiatica Linn. that we call FALSA in Bengali.

Species : Grewia asiatica Linn.
Habit & Habitat : small tree, garden
Date : 26-03-2012 & 11-04-2012
Place : Gobra (Hooghly), WB

Very good set of pictures.
There is always confusion between this one and Grewia tiliifolia
But I think you are correct here.

Yes Sir, i saw an earlier post by … featuring G. tiliifolia. But wiki says that tree is much bigger. My tree is very small, about 12 ft. high and we call it FALSA.

Falsa : 3 posts by 2 authors.
Is falsa the same as the fruit found in Maharashtra and called Kali Maina?

No. Phalsa is some Grewia species.

Thanks for the clarification and the prompt answer.

23072011-BS-3 Id of a Shrub from Karnal roadside area:
pls id this Shrub Shot from roadside area in Panipat haryana. Yellow flowers small round fruits about 1-1.5 cm. To me it looks like Grewia

looks like Grewia tilifolia ?

Yes this is Grewia tiliaefolia

Grewia species for sure . Whether this is T. tiliaefolia or T.asiatica
need to be checked by comparing the floral/ vegetative characters for confirmation.

I think this is Grewia asiatica
as the leaves are more or less symmetrical.
Ref … work and observations.
I am attaching  a table of comparison done earlier by me. Post No. [Efloraindia:34287]
…………………
After searching all the available literature I am convinced that the plant depicted in this mail by me (Both the sets of pictures) is Grewia tiliifolia (And not G.asiatica)
Attaching a table showing the differences compiled together.
If there are any mistakes and errors please correct me.

Kindly confirm if it is Grewia asiatica. Is it one and the same? Taken at Mulshi,Pune in April 11

Yes it is Grewia asiatica.

If it is growing wild in Western ghats it is most likely Grewia tilaefolia.
Look for foliaceous stipules

A reply from another thread (https://groups.google.com/indiantreepix/thread/e8…

“Sorry I am no expert but my query dt.130511sn2 has been identified as Grewia tilaefolia. But I find the pictures with 2 types of flowers on the same plant look closer to Grewia damine. Kindly clarify. the photo was taken at Mulshi, Pune.

In G. tiliaefolia the peduncles should be shorter than petioles (here it doesn’t look so).
Most probably G. asiatica of Malvaceae family (according to “the plant list”). http://www.flowersofindia.in/catalog/slides/Phalsa.html

Grewia asiatica. in my area it is called Falsa and the fruits are really very tasty with a sweet sour taste….

Help Needed : 9 posts by 3 authors.
I need the details of cultivation of Grewia asiatica in India.
If anyone know the exact cultivation locality or cultivators number or address please pass the information. That is very much useful to me.

It seems It is being cultivated in Pakistan

It is also cultivated in our Northern Area.

It is cultivated by one farmer in his farm, mitmita village, Aurangabad (M.S.) India and i also collected from the same locality. Actually these species was described by Linnaeus from the material of surat (cultivated) but when i visited the surat Dist. and many gardens of surat i am unable to collected it from surat.

You can write to …, Professor, Agroforestry, Deptt. of Forestry, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. He may be in a position to help you as the plant is being planted in many parts of Punjab as a fruit tree.

Thanks … for your valuable help.
Can you give me more details about that farmer.

Thanks … for your effort and help.
I will contact … soon.

ID 210911 SB01: 5 images.

Unidentified tree
Location: Mumbai
Date: 170911
Description: Height – about 3 meters
Very few flowers could be observed on the tree
The leaves were chordate, with serrate margin, alternate

Looks like species of Grewia of Malvaceae family.

Atleast my guess till the family level was ok.
I had thought it might be of Tiliaceae, now Malvaceae
Could it be Grewia asiatica?
Further help needed for confirmation

or is it Grewia tiliaefolia??

… most probably Grewia tiliifolia.

I too think it to be Grewia tiliifolia.

I think these images may be of Grewia asiatica L. as Peduncles much longer than petioles as per keys in BSI Flora of India

Its very difficult to convey the species, but yes it appears to Grewia asiatica to me!!

/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/DSCN5760.JPG/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/DSCN5761.JPG/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/DSCN5762.JPG/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/DSCN5756.JPG/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/DSCN5758.JPG/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/DSCN5759.JPG/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/DSCN5757.JPG/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/DSCN5755.JPG

Kindly id this Grewia species seen by me at a farm here.
A medium height tree with yellow-orange flowers.
Is it Phalsa?

This is more likely to be Dhaman [Grewia tiliaefolia] some my photographs of which are available at this link
My photographs of Phalsa [Grewia asiatica] for comparison are available at this link

Thanks for the id.

It was just a guess from me.
My knowledge about trees is limited.
If you believe this to be Dhaman, then it should be the right one.
The farm belongs to an Indian, so I found trees which we see in India.

I think these images may be of Grewia asiatica L. as Peduncles much longer than petioles as per keys in BSI Flora of India

For me, it appears to be Grewia asiatica.

pic taken in the forested areas at Narendrapur near Kolkata.

This is confusing…..Helicteres isora?

Helicteres isora for me too used as a ayurvedic medine though I don’t know the particular use

This looks more like a Grewia species to me possibly Phalsa [Grewia asiatica].

… me too have the same thought of … could be Grewia sp.

Grewia species

Grewia tiliaefolia

More likely to be Grewia asiatica L. due to short petioles.

Grewia tilliaefolia also called as Dhaman in Marathi. It is a medium sized tree though.

Sorry, G. tiliaefolia

If this is a shrub and the drupes are 4 lobed, then it could be Grewia
flavescens
. If the drupes are 2 lobed and edible then it could be G.
asiatica

Grewia orbiculata or Grewia asiatica? : 6 posts by 4 authors. Attachments (11).

Found in Bangalore
3rd May

efi page on Grewia orbiculata & Grewia asiatica

Not G. orbiculata . Watch for the fruits to confirm whether it is G. asiatica (phalsa). However, this could be mostly Grewia damine (Syn. Grewia bicolor, Grewia salvifolia).

efi page on Grewia damine & Grewia asiatica

1. Leaves broad, strongly 5 or more nerved –

  • peduncles at least twice as long as petioles = orbiculata; asiatica
2. Leaves narrow, 3 nerved –
  • leaves finely pubescent above, closely hoary pubescent beneath, peduncles much longer than petioles = salvifolia
(i) leaves densely pubescent above as well as closely hoary beneath; petals notched = orbiculata
(ii) leaves sparsely pilose or pubescent or at length glabrescent above; petals entire; flower buds clavate = asiatica

Hope this resolves the issue.

I think more closer to images at Grewia asiatica L.

I think … is correct.  Fruits also have resemblance, when compared with the  pictures available on G.asiatica fruits.
