Though it appears close as per images at https://efloraofindia.com/2011/05/16/cynoglossum-amabile/, I am not finding such leaves anywhere else including GBIF.
At the same time, I do not find any other alternatives.
Better to keep it here only.

should be a different one!

No flowers detected during the collection period.

Difficult to say in vegetative stage.

I understand the difficulty. I was trying my luck if someone used to Southern Western Ghats is familiar with the leaves, and if possible guess the family and genus.

Could this be a Plantago sp.?

I thought about the same. The venation confuses me!

It seems Boraginaceae herb, Cyanoglossum or related genus.

One possibility as per altitude in the Checklist of Nepal is Cynoglossum lanceolatum Forssk.

However, flowers and fruits will help in id, when ever plant flowers.

I attach 4 images scanned in from slides taken in Ladakh in the 1980s of Lindelofia macrostyla which L. achusoides as I knew it, has been changed to.

My team collected this at Panichar, Suru Valley during the University of Southampton Ladakh Expedition 1980. 3300m, steep, E-facing slope, moist loam, grasses and umbellifers (now Apiaceae family) with Hippophae rhamnoides susbp. turkestanica, petals blue, pale mauve-pin flower-buds, to 60cm.

Whilst members of the University of Southampton Zanskar Expedition in 1981 found it at abundant at 3350m in dry sandy soil in valley bottom.

Flowers of Himalaya describe this (which they knew as L.anchusoides) as common in Lahul and Ladakh on stony slopes & 2100-3600m from Afghanistan to Himachal Pradesh.

Stewart (who knew it as L.anchusoides) recorded it as common from N.Pakistan, Kashmir & Ladakh @ 1500-4000m.

Flora of Lahaul-Spiti record this (as L.anchusoides) as common on dry, sandy slopes at Jispa.

Dickore & Klimes in their checklist of Ladakh plants (2005) also knew it as L.anchusoides, so the change to L.macrostyla must be recent.

Isn’t it about time THEY decided it belonged to a different family rather than Boraginaceae……

Strictly-speaking one needs to check the species, genus and family EVERY time!!

I have MUCH sympathy for non-botanists as at times I get fed-up with the changes…

This is important to judge/ascertain the size of the plant.

I try to take atleast one such frame every time I am shooting flora, it is a little difficult with small/tiny creatures

of fauna because they get disturbed and become instantly mobile. This can be easily done when shooting flora.

Hope all the members will not going this extra MILE, ’cause it definitely is an important MILESTONE in

photo-documentation of Flora n Fauna.

Another Boraginaceae for ID ABOCT2016/03 : 5 posts by 3 authors. 4 images.

This one too is from the same area taken a week after the first walk. The leaves here are broader with prominent veins but these are lower leaves. The upper ones are narrow and without distinct veins. In my opinion this resembles the plant in my last post but I am not so sure. Please advise.

I am looking into this but wonder if by “lower leaves” you have mistaken the large leaves of what appear a Plantago to me? Your 4th image with one of such leaves dominating the photo, suggests this.

IF, it is a Trigonotis then T.rotundifolia is the most likely candidate. T.tibetica is nothing like this and only seems to have records for Ladakh in this region.#

Except Trigonotis rotundifolia is not a recognised name within ‘The Plant List’, so can anyone tell me what H.P. specimens of what was this, are now named as?

Lovely flowers. The images do seem to match other images of C.microglochin. Stewart found this to be very common and with larger plants and flowers than C.glochidiatum @ 2000-3500m.

Thank you … To me the leaves look different from the efloraofindia images. The ones on my sample have no distinct veins. I haven’t been able to trek up to collect more evidence but I am hoping to do it soon.

Yet another Cynoglossum ABAUG01/01 : 3 posts by 2 authors.

If I am not mistaken I have now seen four varieties of Cynoglossum here–two with bright blue flowers, one with smaller white flowers, and now this with pink/mauve flowers similar in size and shape with the blue varieties. Polunin and Stainton catalogue only two species C. glochidiatum and C. zeylanicum (p. 279, Flowers of the Himalaya) which have both blue 8mm flowers and could point to what I have seen here but the illustration in the book for C. glochidiatum shows the leaves too hairy to correspond correctly to the plants here.

Col. Collett lists four species C. furcatum with pale blue or white flowers (but leaves and stems with brown appressed hair), C. micranthum also with small pale blue of white flowers (could be our white flower variety), C. wallichii with dark blue flowers and C. microglochin with larger dark blue flowers (p. 331-333, Flora Simlensis). He adds that C. microglochin with 1/2 inch dark blue flowers is common at Dalhousie.

Another book (Tibetan Medicinal Plants by Christa Kletter, Monika Kreichbaum) treats C. wallichii and C. glochidiatum as synonyms and adds another species C. lanceolatum to the list. I am not sure which one are we looking at here.

I think this may also be Cynoglossum microglochin var. nervosum (Benth. ex C.B.Clarke) Y.J.Nasir as per details in FOP and as per your posting in another thread.

Thank you … I am not certain whether the photos in this thread match my specimen. … photos are closer. The barbed wire appearance is pronounced on my sample with smooth glossy leaves. I need to look them up again this year and study afresh.

Growing wild. Earlier I found this plant at Sangla.

There are a number of songs starting with forget-me-not. It is also the emblem of Canadian Alzheimer Society. In New Foundland 1st July is known as Forget-me-not day. In German legend each flower was named by God, but this small herb was left some how- so it cried- Vergissmeinernicht Herr Gott. God said- well it would be your name-(In German it means forget mine not – not me).
It is Myositis, there are several species, this is perhaps scorpoides. and belongs to Boraginaceae.

I was delighted to see the pictures of Forget-me-not. These floweres look different in Alaska where it is the National flower of the state. The colour is similar but the plant there looks different.
Every house in Alaska will keep Forget-me-not in flowere pots as they also believe it brings good luck.

I must pass with this.

Although only a small number of Cynoglossums (as the genus was considered previously i.e. not counting those transferred from Lindelofia) are recorded from the Himalaya – 8 according to ‘Flowers of the Himalaya’, there is no RELIABLE up-to-date check-list for the NW Himalaya,

let alone a RELIABLE Flora with detailed descriptions and meaningful keys. Or indeed RELIABLY determined pressed specimens in most herbaria.

Yes, Flora of Pakistan covers the OLD Cynoglossum but there may well be species in H.P. not within this (which only includes Pakistan territory & Kashmir). This Flora is out-of-date in relation to present-day treatments. How reliable it is, I cannot access but would have some doubts.

SOME members of the Boraginaceae are difficult if not impossible, to be certain as to the species, without MATURE fruit.

The images available are of young flowers only.

One PROBABLY could narrow the photos down to a couple of possibilities or probabilities – though I cannot but wonder how good the most recent revision of the genus is.

I do not have the time available to scrutinise all the Himalayan species of this genus at this time.

I cannot see how one can have confidence SOLELY by attempting to match these images with those available on the internet (which may well be unreliable).
For me, I would leave it as Cynoglossum sp. and RETURN to the images IN THE FUTURE.

Pl. Try to check comparative images in EFI.

I am once again attempting to ascertain the identity of this Cynoglossum species which is quite common here and is in flower right now.

The plant has shiny leaves, the lower ones quite large (upto 30cm) and stalked while the upper ones are stalkless and become gradually smaller as they climb. Both leaf surfaces are covered in short white hair but appear smooth and glossy to the naked eye. The lower leaves tend to rot and fall off easily. The plant is roughly 80-90 cm high, much branched and taller than broad. The flowers are tiny (about 6mm across) and blue. The nutlets are 4 with about four rows of spikes (two on the edges, two on the face).

My plant could be C. microglochin var. nervosum, but I am not entirely convinced. Please advise.

I think same is the position with some of your threads identified as this species.

This is as per comparative images in efi site. Either our images are incorrectly identified or it has spread to Nepal since the checklist was prepared or it has always been there but overlooked in the Checklist.

If you can do in depth studies with the keys and descriptions and come out with different findings, it will be appreciated.
This species was published in 1989 in Flora of Pakistan as per the link. I think checklist of Nepal is before this. Distribution given in Flora of Pakistan is Afghanistan to Kumaon. Thus there is every likelihood of this being found in Nepal.

Is it listed in Nepal ? POWO says so but not the EFN. By the way is the flowering season matching ? Not matching with FoI.

Mosts of the posts in the efi is in the month of August and some in July but this sp. is in Jan. So bit confused. Did not find any links in the net showing flowering months for this sp.

I am a bit not sure about this here because Cynoglossum microglochin var. nervosum (Benth. ex C.B.Clarke) Y.J.Nasir. is not listed in Nepal flora as per books and eflora and as per the following link it’s flowering season is May-June whereas the picture was shot in January which is the flowering season from C.lanceolatum.I think further discussion is necessary.

Cynoglossum amabile Stapf & Drummond (accepted name) ???

According to Enumeration of the Flowering Plants of Nepal, Cynoglossum amabile has been recorded from Nepal but this is ONLY on the basis of a specimen gathered by Bailey’s collector from an unknown collector. It was identified by Johnston the Boraginaceae specilalist but the Hara, who covered Boraginaceae for the Enumeration considered this to be doubtful. He gave its distribution as Bhutan, E.Tibet and W.China, ?Nepal.

Hara listed 4 species of Cynoglossum for Nepal. There was no key provided and Cynoglossum is not an easy genus. Sometimes mature fruits are needed to be certain of identification.

I note the suggestion of C.amabile is based on consulting entries for Cynoglossum in eFI but I wonder about some of these…. ANOTHER genus which requires examining more closely – though a DAUNTING task with many complications likely. CANNOT be a priority.

Flora of Bhutan has a key for Cynoglossum but this requires either pressed specimens or possibly very good close-ups to reveal details of stem hairs, lower leaf hairs, diameter of corolla and nutlet details – which one CANNOT see in the images taken by …

Nevertheless, this work says C.amabile is close to C.furcatum Wall. (known as ‘Bende Kuro’ and ‘Khirpatey’ in Nepal which is a minor weed of crops, apparently very frequently misidentified as C.zeylanicum (Lehmann) Brand, which is a species of tropical India & Sri Lanka which does not reach the Himalaya. I need to check how this name relates to C.zeylancium (Vahl) Thunb. ex Lehm.

R.R. Mill who covered Boraginaceae for ‘Flora of Bhutan’ Vol 2 Part 2 (1999) stated “Further investigation on the taxonomic status of these small-flowered plants is needed.

I think for the present, unless we have a Cynoglossum/ Boraginaceae specialist in the group who can “come to the rescue”, best to just call the plant Cynoglossum sp. Speculating too much as to what it MIGHT be will only lead to further confusion/ mistakes.

In case members consider this UNSATISFACTORY, even at top herbaria such as Edinburgh, there can be specimens which DEFY naming even to genus or sometimes family.

I recollect on my last visit (decades ago) there was a box above a cabinet labelled “COME UP AND SEE ME SOME TIME” for such specimens which had defied the staff members….
SOMETIMES, either the photos posted do not provide sufficient detail or the genus is insufficiently known/studied to go beyond genus (unless someone with specialist knowledge is available).

I took these pictures en route to Suru Valley, Kargil, which look similar to … flower from Lahaul Spiti. Brilliant blue shy flowers, with mauve buds.

Would these also therefore be Campanula alpina?

Have a look at fruits. To me it looks a member of Boraginaceae. I will have a more critical look to recall. I visited Suru valley in 1972, wish I had a digital camera then. I will have a look at my herbarium collection and may be there is something to help..

Although some Boraginaceae plants as Myosetes have some resemblance with these, but Boraginous flowers are not bell shaped, petals are free.

first of all, welcome to this group. Its a privilege to have you amongst us. Suru Valley in 1972 must have been so much more beautiful with not too much construction/habitation around.

And thanks to you and … for your suggestions. I am a total lay(wo)man and depend on experts like you both and others in this group.

Onosoma of Boraginaceae definitely has drooping campanula like flowers. Blue flowers are found in O. hypoleucum and O. thomsonii. You may try these.

I must tell you as I looked at the third pic it reminded of the very imaginative heads of creatures drawn by makers of MEN in Black movies… complete with antenna like projections and eyes at the end of them… i could just wait to see the blue things starting to rotate and the green parts start to talk… I am weird I know, kid at heart even at my age, I like those movies… art imitating nature…

Cynoglossum lanceolatum from Kashmir and Chakrata:

Cynoglossum lanceolatum Forssk., Fl. Aegypt.-Arab. 41. 1775. Syn: C. micranthum Desf.

The species is quite distinct in its pale blue or white much smaller flowers hardly 2-2.5 mm across, lanceolate leaves, covered both with bulbous based hairs and simple hairs and uniformly bristly nutlets. In closely related C. zeylanicum (syn: C. furcatum Wall. ex Roxb.) flowers are larger (5-6 mm across) and leaves covered with soft appressed hairs.

I have a feeling that plant depicted on FOI as C. zeylonicum may in fact be Myosotis sp and not a cynnoglossum as nutlets in lowers old flowers seem to be totally hidden.

This hairy shrub is growing near my home. I remember having difficulty last year in separating Cynoglossum species which are well-represented here. Is this a Cynoglossum species or a Hackelia sp. (how do we tell the difference)? Could we have an ID with these pictures without nutlets? Please advise.

I think corolla size is crucial. In C. lanceolatum flowers are barely 2-2.5 mm across, where as they are almost twice in diam. in C. zeylanicum. Also hairs on leaves are shorter and without broad bases in C. zeylanicum.

There are with me, few plants which have very small flowers (just about 2 – 2.5 mm), and the fruiting is 4 ¿ nutlets ? per flower.
Above posted plant has flowers about 2.5 mm.
I understand there is larger flowered plant – I have them too. Will post query soon.

first three photographs are Adelocaryum spp because the flowers are entirely different while as other four photographs are Adelocaryum coelestinum because there flowers are blue and have different morphology.

I am now of the opinion that this could be Cynoglossum lanceolatum. It has tiny flowers, smaller hairy leaves and nutlets arranged in a row (rather than zigzag as in other Cynoglossum sp. I have photographed). Please advise.

Lack of veins on the leaves & dense hairs on them make me feel that these are more closer to images at Cynoglossum zeylanicum (Lehm.) Brand (I think more widely distributed & with variable leaves).

On further consideration, I feel it is Cynoglossum lanceolatum only. Leaves are with bulbous hairs and veins are covered with these hairs. On closer scrutiny, these (veins) can be observed.

tiny blue flowers for id, mm15062012: Wildflowers growing by the edge of a path in Darjeeling, they seem to be of the Boraginaceae family. Would very much appreciate an id. The flowers were about 8mm across.

What is very interesting to me is that I saw two spotted lady bird beetles in one frame. Did the plant show aphid infestation

I do not recall seeing aphid infestation, but the lady bird beetles were rather common. While we were in Sandakhphu in Singalila NP, I remember seeing a group of 7 or 8 in a about 2 square inches. They were everywhere.

“Basal leaves elliptic-oblong to oblanceolate…. Cauline leaves oblanceolate….. apiculate, uppermost ones similar but smaller and sessile …..” = it may explain variation in leaves in your 1st pic with those of the rest two
“Inflorescence in flower short and crowded, in fruit loose and elongated…..” = as can be seen in 1st & 2nd images
“Corolla limb 5-7 mm broad; blue or bluish-purple….” = may support you description in the post “The flowers were about 8mm across”

Please identify. By any chance does this plant belong to genus Aconitum

This would be fruiting Primula macrophylla.

Rather a member of Boraginaceae, perhaps Pseudomertensia parviflora, exserted stamens are characteristic

pic 7b shows calyx and style. There is no corolla. Besides
the flowers (fallen) are in umbel and not scorpioid as in
Boraginaceae. Pls have a look again

But perhaps you did not notice four nutlets at the base of style in 7b. Also Primula macrophylla (rather most Primulas) has basal rosette of leaves and not cauline leaves like we see in 7a. Also the leaf arrangement, leaf surface and inflorescence is typical of Boraginaceae.

This should be a Pseudomertensia species, probably Pseudomertensia echioides, which is the only Himalayan species of Pseudomertensia with
the style protruding out of the flower.

I have been watching your nice collection from Ladakh.
Himalayan flora is a very interesting subject.
I find that few of the flowers you have recorded are similar to what I have done so during My Lahaul Spiti visit in last week of Jun 09.
Of course both regions are climatically similar; often described as cold desert. Thanks for sharing.

thank you for your remarks. Yes, indeed Himalayan flora takes ones breath away – as do most flora (and fauna), in fact. This collection has actually been photographed by my brother who lives there and he requested IDs. When I visited Ladakh late May/early June, most of these flowers were probably only preparing to surface to show their beauty. Now is the right time to visit this heaven on earth.

Thats a nice shot of the Rosefinch. Being a birder myself, flora and fauna keep tossing me around between the two. Very distracting, but supremely exhilarating.

The image is Lindelofia stylosa, Boraginaceae – a plant of dry inner valleys @ 3000-4500m incl. Ladakh with records from Nubra, Dras & Zanskar. But please take and post more than just one photo per plants (several, covering close-ups of flowers and foliage plus habit and of habitat make areal difference; with the advent of digital cameras this can now be done at no cost). Sometimes a species is distinctive and can be recognised from a single image, as in this case for me but not always (and not everyone can) also do give an altitude and approximate location each time.

I cannot locate any Lindelofias on eFI. Have they all been transferred to another genus?

I note Lindelofia anchusoides is NOT an accepted name in ‘The Plant List’.

In the mean-time I attach some lovely images taken by Feroze Khan & Mudita Badwhar thanks to Deepak Badwhar – which show the young, fascinating fruits of L.stylosa. Plus a single image scanned in from a slide taken in the 1980s for Chris Chadwell.

Flowers of the Himalaya says Lindelofia stylosa is common in Ladakh, forming large clumps on stony slopes & steppes @ 3300-4700m from Pakistan to Himchal Pradesh.

Stewart considered this to be a plant of the dry inner valleys from N.Pakistan to Ladakh @ 3000-4500m.

The authors of Flora of Lahul-Spiti did lot locate this species during their travels in Lahaul but recorded it as frequent on alpine slopes and in glacial moraines at Kenlung due to a herbarium specimen collected by Bor at Dehra Dun.

I was wondering of seeing the same plant in the Western Ghats – especially because of the registered sight of four nutlets !

Yes Cynoglossum zeylanicum. The species looks similar to C. lanceolatum (flowers 2-2.5 mm across) but easily differentiated by larger (4-5 mm across) flowers. Also leaves are short-appressed hairy and not with long bulbous-based hairs.

P1240377.jpg & P1240381.jpg show spheroid fruit with glochids on its surface … would therefore think of Cynoglossum zeylanicum (the correct name could be Cynoglossum furcatum) … Paracaryopsis coelestina (current name: Adelocaryum coelestinum) would have cup-like fruit with glochids on its periphery.
The intent of query is to know if there are any other species of Cynoglossum reported from this part of Sahyadri.
Please correct my thoughts, if wrong.

Now I find from the link that Keshava Murthy and Yoganarasimhan in Flora of Coorg District in 1990, applied this name probably derived from the Plant List. The combination under Paracaryopsis was made in 1991. We have to request for the expert opinion about the generic name to be adopted by us.

About Cyanoglossum of Western ghats : a species is observed on planes while another grows on hill slopes. This knowledge about the habitat is also important….

We have Trigonotis tibetica And T.rotundifolia in kashmir.
