Perennials. Culms 50-150 cm long, spongy, creeping or floating, rooting at the lower nodes, sometimes decumbent; nodes glabrous. Leaves 12-40 x 0.5-1.2 cm, linear or linear-lanceolate, base narrow or rounded, apex acute or acuminate; sheaths to 16 cm long, keeled; ligule a tuft of hairs. Panicles 25-45 cm long, spiciform; racemes 7-14, each 1.5-5 cm long. Spikelets 2.5-4 mm long, ovate or broadly elliptic. Lower glume 0.5-1 x 1 mm, ovate, truncate. Upper glume 2-3 x 1.5-2 mm, ovate, obtuse. Lower floret barren, epaleate. Upper floret bisexual. First lemma 2.5-3.5 x 1-1.5 mm, ovate-elliptic, acute. Second lemma c. 3 x 1.5 mm, broadly elliptic, acute, crustaceous, rugulose. Palea c.2 x 1 mm, elliptic-acute, crustaceous, 2-keeled, rugulose. Stamens 3. Ovary oblong; stigma c. 1 mm long.
