Vallisneria spiralis, also known as Straight Vallisneria, Tape grass, or Eel grass is a common aquarium plant that prefers good light and a nutrient rich substrate. In the wild, it can be found in tropical and sub-tropical regions worldwide.
It has narrow, linear leaves that range in colour from a pale-green to reddish up to 3 feet (1 m) long and up to 0.75 inches broad. V. spiralis is monoecious with flowers carried on long spiral stalks that break away from the plant and float on the water’s surface. Seeds have not been observed germinating in aquaria. Instead, it most often propagates by runners which can lead to dense stands.V. spiralis is an “unwanted organism” in New Zealand.[1] It is listed on the National Pest Plant Accord prohibiting it from sale and commercial propagation and distribution.
It is found in estuarine habitats, lakes, rivers, waterlogged swamps with open water, man-made reservoirs, and irrigation channels. It thrives in streams but is seldom present in fast waters.(From IUCN Red List (LC) )

Najas,
I agree with you … for Najus,
New in this amazing group. Didn’t know how to give plant ID. Please let me know the process.
Initially observe the plant carefully entire profile (with Description), then study and understand the etymology after these two steps definitely we will identify any plant with literature. In identification, we will do mistakes at the initial stage of learning even 100 % match with literature, but that know with years of genuine experience only,

– Vallisneria spiralis most probably.
– Or perhaps V. natans, as V. spiralis probably does not grow in India
– Vallisneria spiralis is found in India as well as V. natans [Reference: Govaerts et al. 2011: Kew’s checklist)
My contention was based on the spiral stalks present below the flower, if that is not a unique character, then I may be wrong.
– I would be happier if both species grow in India. My information says that V. spiralis does not grow in Asia and the specimens identified as such belong to V. natans. By the way spirally coiled female stalk is the generic
character and not unique to any species.

Pl. confirm. On 15/8/09 in Himayat Sagar Lake on the outskirts of Hyderabad, AP.This plant grows only when the level of flowing water recedes and the flow of water becomes low but not stagnant. This is typical plant of the paddy fields, hence it is called as Bhat(rice)-Kamal in marathi. You may observe that the submerged leaves are narrow and shortly petioled and the floating leaves are with long spongy grooved petioles; their length varying as per the level of water. The spathe in which the flower grows is also with varying length of grooved tubular spongy peduncle to bring the flower just above the water.

Attaching a collage of Ottelia alismoides (DUCK-LETTUCE/ WATER PLANTAIN).This aquatic plant is known to me from my childhood in a village (Now in Bangladesh). We used to call it KEURALI. We used to eat the fruits raw and as cooked vegetable. Today I spoke to my friend (from the same village now living in a town) about this plant. He told me he has not seen it for many years. We are making the earth poorer each year.
cant see the flower details
This species is in plenty in Surat …… commonly seen in Irrigation canals and ditches by their side, particularly near the bridges made for village/ agricultural roads ……. because that spot tends to be deeper a bit and water stagnates longer even after supply is stopped, facilitating its growth. Ottelia and Potamogeton are two common species in such water courses.
Attaching a collage of the species. The habitat is under threat. I don’t know weather I will be able to get the fruits.

Yes …, common plant for Physiology experiments.
In our childhood days we used to keep this plant in the fish tank.
Good specimen to study the hydrophytic group of plants, along with the Typha species…
Hydrilla is a noxious water weed here in much of the US. I don’t know its status in India, but I suspect it could be very problematic there as well. http://www.protectyourwaters.plants_hydrilla.php
Hydrilla here grows only during the months of July August and September. After this water dries up and wheat is sown so till now no great problem
It is really problematic in Dal Lake of Kashmir, where the Government spends huge amounts every year for de-weeding of the lake

It looks like the dreaded Hydrilla that chokes our lakes here. The cure is to release Tilapia into the water to eat it.
It is Ceratophyllum submersium.
Hydrilla Species
IT is tough to identify from this photo but i think it may be species of Hydrilla from Hydrocarytaceae family
I found a few links for Ceratophyllum submersum:
http://commons.wikimedia.Ceratophyllum_submersum & http://www.biopix.com/Ceratophyllum%20submersum (a few pix). However, at first glance these appear to be a bit different to a layman like me (though I may be wrong).
It certainly appears close to Hydrilla verticillata as per links:
http://www.ncwater.org/Aquatic_Weed_Control/weeds.php &

It is Hydrilla species. Ceratophyllum should have one or twice forked leaves, and much slender leaf segments
