Erinocarpus nimmonii | Barvi forest (Maharashtra): Erinocarpus nimmonii A beautiful collage … as far as I know, it is a deciduous tree I refer to a book of Shrikant ji (Flowers of Sahyadri), where it shows in vegetative stage throughout the year. Though it mentions the word deciduous but I went with the first observation.

Flowers and leaves of Erinocarpus nimmonii (pics taken at Bombay port Trust Garden at Colaba, Mumbai in Jan 2009) Although plants do not locomote unlike animals, they certainly do show movements in response to stimuli – the slow phototrophic (movement towards the sun), geotrophic (moving into the earth), and those of climbers moving very naturally towards a support even without eyes. Then there are the quicker responses like the tactile movements of the common Mimosa pudica (Touch-me-not) and those of insectivorous plants like the lid of the Pitcher plant shutting the pitcher close once an insect has entered the pitcher, the movement of the shiny dew-like hair of Drossera (Sundew) trapping an insect….
But what fascinated a group of us who were taking a nature walk in BPT Gardens the other day was the sudden and unexpected movements shown by the flowers of Erinocarpus nimonii. The shrub was in full bloom (pl. see attachment), looking very attractive with its yellow flowers. Bees were hovering over only a couple of them, and as if to acknowledge our presence and show off its abilities, the sepals of these same flowers began to jerk outwards, one by one, thrilling us to bits. Could this be a kind of strategy to shake the pollen out of the anthers and shower it upon the bees, their pollinators? Excellent photograph with pollinators and very interesting observation.

i have a question: why is it called Jungli bhindi.
i do not know of any bhindi that has those thorn like surface appendages. I think they are soft/ flexible spines. Local folks use the fruits as vegetable. They must be having their own approach for broadly classifying forest vegetables and fruits. oh, need some ethnobotany papers about that district?

These are mobile shots and hence the long shots are not very clear. Awesome photographs ! I have seen this plant near Shimoga and the ID looks correct for me. We call it as Kadu bende (meaning jungle ladies finger) . References:
