Here is a link for details: http://ayushveda.com/herbs/barringtonia-acutangula.htm A perfect picture for an ID attempt. It shows leaves, inflorescence and the fruit. You did not get flowers because they bloom at late night. It is Barringtonia acutangula, a tree usually found near rivers and ponds close to sea shore. Thank you for identification … Actually I could manage to the leaves, inflorescence & the fruit togetehr as there were some branches lying on ground (probably trimmed). There were lots of fruits (raw & ripe), so collected some seeds of this tree. lets hope they germinate. I hope some one collect some more seeds that would be lying there. Infact it would be good idea to collect seeds, ready seedlings/saplings of various trees from this place (Jijamata Udya, Mumbai). I think there is little mix up in the local names shown in both the links. Barringtonia acutangula – efloraofindia | Google Groups : 6 posts by 6 authors. Attachments (5) Is it Barringtonia racemosa? Gaertn. <=> Freshwater Mangrove Tree: Barringtonia is an evergreen tree of moderate size, called by Sanskrit writers Hijja or Hijjala. The fruit is spoken of as Samudra-phala and fruit, and is one of the best known domestic remedies.
Also called Stream Barringtonia or Itchy Tree (after a catepillar with irritant hairs that sometimes colonises the undersides of the leaves).
Barringtonia is a tree 5-8 m tall with rough fissured dark grey bark. Leaves are obovate. Red flowers are produced on pendulous racemes about 20cm long. Four sided fruits are produced periodically throughout the year. Partly deciduous in extended dry periods. This species grows on the banks of freshwater rivers, the edges of freshwater swamps and lagoons and on seasonally flooded lowland plains, commonly on heavy soils.
Found in Madagascar and tropical Asia, amongst other places.
Propagation is by seed. Tolerant of heavy clay soils with poor drainage, it can grow in a range of soils.

2. Barringtonia acutangula flowers are borne on abundant long pendulous racemes. Flowers open by 8 pm, have strong unpleasant smell and they fall off by dawn. This tree grows along rivers and fresh water tanks in coastal areas of western India. The fallen floating flowers form a red carpet on the water surface early morning which is treat to watch.
