I do not think it is A.odoratissima. We need to wait till it flowers & set fruits.

    I agree with …

    Try Cassia.

    Try

    Location: NBNP Garden
    Habitat: Garden
    Habit: Tree

This plant has to be looked carefully

There is no published name as Cassia hybrida, the only we have is Cassia hybrida Tenore now considered as synonym of Senna floribunda (Cav.) Irwin & Barneby. This plant is however, clearly Cassia as seen by long sigmoid stamen. The fruit resembles Cassia fistula and may well be Rainbow shower tree a hybrid between Cassia fistula x renigera with no formal recognised name.

    – i had joined indiatreepix some time later..

this is Cassia ,, may be species nodosa??

i think … could be right. If i remember right the label on the tree said Cassia nodosa– but again i’m not absolutely sure- hence i asked for ID. I have not come across any other tree of this species.

For confirmed identity one has to see close ups of filaments, stipules and leaflets.

Pink Cassia : Leafbirth: It is difficult to escape the allure of a Pink Cassia in flower but I found myself quietly smitten with the snug beauty of the new foliage 😉

Sharing some pictures of a Pink Cassia sprouting baby leaves with large stipules in Kandivali [North Mumbai]. The last two are mine and the first is clicked by my friend .. to whom I owe my initiation into occasional photography.

The flowers of this Cassia javanica L. are really beautiful.

I don’t have satisfactory pictures of the flowers yet but have attached a couple [one of the three swollen stamens is broken in these shots].

I think it should be Cassia renigera Benth. as per keys & images herein.

Cassia with swollen filaments SMP MAY2016/7 : 11 posts by 5 authors. Attachments (7)

I am posting this plant again for review of proper ID
This Cassia tree flowers in Pune city around this time (May every year). Most Cassia trees flowering at this time show almost same botanical characters apart from some colour variations.
I referred the Key provided by … to come to conclusion which I am still finding difficult.
    Will describe some observations first
    1. Big tree 10 meters approx.
    2. Leaves compound. Leaflets 9-12 pairs opposite.
    3. Leaflet size 3-5cm x 1-2 cm
Surface velvetty. Petiole 2 cm Petolule 2-3 mm. Apex Acute/ Obtuse Pl. opine
    4. Stipules ? Leafy 5mm x 15 mm. ? reniform?
    5. Basal leaves of the branches were lacking the stipules while all the apical branches had it
    6. Calyx segments 5 Red
    7. Corolla 5 segments alternating with calyx segments. Mostly 2.5 cm
    8. Gynoecium 2.5 cm sickle shaped not glabrous( May be pubescent) with stigma red in colour.
    9. Peduncle of flower 3 cm. Racemes with a lot many bracts and ?bracteoles.
    10. Stamens 3 sets a) 3 small b) 4 medium c) 3 long stamens 2.5 cm dark yellow with a nodule in the centre of the filament of size 3 mm
We have 3 known species of Pink Cassias with nodule in the filament.
I found some character of each species in my below mentioned tree.
    a) Reniform stipules pointing to Cassia renigera but they should be more than 2.5 cm as per the key
Here they are less than 2 cm broad to rule out C. renigera
Now 2 species remain Cassia javanica ssp. javanica and
                                         Cassia javanica ssp. nodosa.
The differentiating key is based on size of stipule and tip of leaflets and calyx colours.
Apart from tip which appears acute to me all 3 characters for Cassia javanica ssp javanica are matching here :: Stipule > 5mm leafy(In fact 15 mm) Calyx red. Petals were 2.5 cm
The colour of petals is white a feature more of C.javanica ssp nodosa
    Please help in concluding.
My mind now says that it is Cassia javanica ssp. javanica.

Kidney shaped stipules, velvety leaflets, glabrous ovary are enough to separate it as C. renigera.

Stipule length may be 15-25 mm, I will change in the key.

Thanks … This is what I like . Experience.

Which characters to be given importance the most.
Once again Thank you so much

On close observation of different pictures on Cassia site I found one important character which may turn out to be useful in forming a key.
    THE COLOUR OF STYLE (GYNOECIUM)
In Cassia javanica it seems to be red throughout whereas in Cassia renigera it is green in most part whereas the terminal part including stigma is red in colour.
I request all of you to check this coloration along with colour of calyx in all your pictures.

good idea, … i will for my cases that i have. thanks

BUT COME TO THINK OF IT DIGITAL CAMERAS ARE NOTORIOUS IN NOT GETTING THE REDS IN TRUE COLOR  IE KEEPING THE AUTHENTIC  TRUE color of the flower

so how would we judge… unless we all carry a color checker card

to really authenticate the red, oranges etc

    just a thought

Not exact colour but definitely we can distinguish whether it is red or green. It is that gross. That’s why important. You will get the either of the two

you are right about the gross difference.

i was still lamenting my roselle pictures a few months ago

i try every year and never do i get the correct color of the flower
now i am convinced its not just the pigment in the petals
it must also be something do with uv absorption and reflection
i do not know how to test  it at home without any equipment or special filters and special lighting etc. hence that was on my mind but never mind. back to this cassia question. yes you are right

Much of the confusion between these species of pink Cassias may also be due to hybridisation which has occurred over many years. I have observed several trees which display mixed characters and are very difficult to pin down.
In the book entitled Some Beautiful Indian Trees by Blatter and Millard it is stated that the style of Cassia javanica is green. Also, in C. renigera there are usually from 10 – 20 pairs of leaflets.
My guess is that the posted plant is Cassia nodosa, but I may well be wrong. See the shape and nos. of leafets as well as the colour of the flower.
Attaching a paper from the Royal Asiatic Society of Bengal, 1940, which you might find interesting.

    Attachments (1) – Cassia paper.pdf- 1 MB

Thanks for the feedback …  Will certainly go through it.

Requesting to please ID this Cassia captured in Jijamata Udyan, Mumbai in May 2013.

    Seems Cassia javanica.

I can see the 3 lower stamens yellow in colour with distinct nodes on it.

Most likely Cassia javanica var. nodosa.

Thank you … for the ID and also for pointing out the distinguishing character.

I think it is closer to Cassia renigera Benth. as per keys herein.

At a private garden, about 15-20 feet in height. A cultivated tree.

Looks like Cassia javanica. .. will probably confirm for you.

Looks more like C.renigera (burmese pink Cassia). Note the stamens of unequal length and the swellings on the filaments. However, you may please send more pictures of the flowers/ inflorescence and foliage and enable the the members of e-flora to identify quickly.

I too think that this could be C. javanica

Voting for cassia javanica subsp. renigera.
As earlier said, the stamens have a swelling in the middle.

in C. javanica flowers are Pinkish white which i can easily see in the photograph…

I feel it should be Cassia renigera Benth. as per keys & images herein.

Photos not of very good quality as they were taken in the afternoon in scorching sun with 42 degree temp. Tried to mainly capture botanical characters.

Identification based on the lower three stamens with nodes on it.

    Not aware of the variety/subspecies…..

It should be Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa as per discussions therein.

It should be Cassia javanica L. only as keys herein.

Sorry. After taking stipules into consideration, I feel it should be Cassia renigera Benth. as per keys & images herein.

    Cassia for ID : Lalbagh,Bangalore : 080712 : AK-2:  Pictures taken in Lalbagh, Bangalore on 15/4/12.

A medium tree with pink flowers.

    This should be Cassia javanica….

With round swellings on the filaments of 3 stamens It is Cassia javanica. As the tree has no spiny remnants on trunk it could be more precisely A. javanica var. indochinensis (earlier Cassia javanica ssp. nodosa).

Can it be Cassia renigera Benth. as per keys & images herein (due to mucronate leaflets) ?

    ID Please.

    Again Pink Cassia

I think this is Cassia javanica

This in Pink Cassia [Cassia javanica]

    Cassia javanica

Is this flower of the same species? The flowers are a lighter shade but blooming in such profusion in Chennai now.

I feel it should be Cassia renigera Benth. as per keys & images herein.

I do not know about the species, but there are a couple of shades that I have. I had sent the pictures of the dark pink, however, I have the lighter coloured one too.

the double shaded flower variety of Cassia looks like Cassia nodosa. Please let the expert’ s judge it.

I feel it should be Cassia renigera Benth. as per keys & images herein.

Yes … this is Cassia javanica I saw it in Chhindwara (M.P.) when I was posted there.

    Good picture.

Please explain the difference in this Cassia and C. nodosa.

If I am not wide off the mark nodosa is much lighter shade of pink than javanica.

I feel it should be Cassia renigera Benth. as per keys & images herein.

Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae (Caesalpiniaceae)– Cassia angolensis: Angolan native. This is a rare tree, shown here at Fullerton Arboretum (Fullerton, California, USA). It may well be the only specimen in the USA. It sets pods regularly, but seeds fail to mature properly. I have considered grafting this on the locally-plentiful C. leptophylla.

    Is it grown in India?

Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae (Caesalpiniaceae)–Cassia leptophylla: As this site is dedicated to posting pictures of species found growing in India, I don’t want to post many species from the US, but these species should grow somewhere there locally. Perhaps they are in the trade there? I will limit to just a few.
Cassia leptophylla here photographed in southern California. Native to Brazil, grows to approximately 10m/30 ft.

What is the difference between this and Cassia javanica?

Many thanks … for your query – am sure it will help validate my ID in turn; would stand corrected if wrong.
Attaching cropped version of the main photo. Hopefully it will help those wanting to check stamens.

My ID is based on description at the Top Tropicals.

Actually I was looking for the description of the number of stamens with node on it.
To my belief such stamens are 3 in Cassia javanica whereas here in Cassia bakeriana all lower 5 have the nodes on them.
    Is this the clear difference…?

The leaves in … C. javanica picture are slightly acuminate while in C. bakeriana they do not seems to acuminate.

Cassia with pinkish-orange flowers Is it Cassia roxburghii ? UD 8212011 001: For last a couple of years when in town once in a while I have seen these strange arrangement of the flowers … see figure 1 and 2.
The tree is in public space, at GolPark , Kolkata, where Vivekanand’s statue is… its a traffic circle with many many buses, taxis, cars trucks, auto rickshaws galore… all honking and spewing out grey, black or white smoke… and high decibel sounds… This tree seems to be thriving..

I think this may be Cassia Roxburghii…. need confirmation please….

If my interpretation is wrong … what is its ID?

but that slide’s structure of the inflorescence is different that what is here…
    could you please check these…
    1): .flickr
    2): fairchildgarden
1 is from a guy in australia, 2 is from Fairchild garden which is Univ Miami florida Bot garden..

Quite likely the ID as C.roxburghii is correct. One grown up tree is at Hansoti Lane, Ghatkopar (W) planted by Dr.Hansoti himself.

please tell me if your tree has this peculiar way the flowers arise as if out of the spine/vertebral column of a person lying face down .. and the drooping leaves are the persons ribs and arms…
its the only analogy I can think of…
and I dont see it described the way I see it …
that’s my problem.. with this diagnosis…
also the flowers not exactly pink…
they are peachy-orangish- pink with reddish mixed in … what does that make ???

I think it should be C. roxburghii only. The other three species with similar flowers all have filaments swollen in the middle.

and flower spike growing out of the “vertebral column” type arrangement… ????
    is it described?

I finally found something that looks like this.. at floridata site… floridata now what I want is a key for flowering pink.. red cassia…

    Here it is

1a. Ovary glabrous, leaflets oblong, densely velvety, tip mucronate; leafy  bracts at base of each flower; stipules large leafy…….Cassia renigera
    1b. Ovary hairy……..(2)
    2a. Stipules 5 mm long, linear, not leafy, leaflets acute, glabrous beneath;

Both during and out of the flowering period, the Pink Cassias are sprouting new leaves throughout the year and there is much to delight in the charm of their youth. Each raw, yellow-green newborn leaf of Cassia roxburghii must go through a subtle palette of glaucous tints before arriving at its mature green complexion.
Unlike the large leafy stipules of Cassia javanica, those of C. roxburghii are narrow, slender, and sickle-shaped.

    Photographed in Kandivali, North Mumbai.

Thanks … for your keen observations and documenting it with photographs. As I said earlier it is interesting and important to follow your plants in non flowering stage too. Nicely depicted it. Worth remembering for all.

Cassia grandis seen at Lalbagh, Bangalore seemed a little different.

    Cassia roxburghii/ javanica. Please verify.

With no swellings on the 3 long stamens it should be either C. roxhburghiii  or C.grandis. It is not possible to decide the species as the photograph is not clear and difficult to get details of the flower and leaf arrangement etc. Please check Trees of Delhi web site specifically page 239 for differentiation.

    Ornamental Cassia For ID : Muscat : 020613 : AK-1 : Attachments (3 + 5 ).  9 posts by 5 authors.
Very old pictures of Ornamental Cassia seen in Muscat during Nov & Dec.
    Medium trees, spreading out, cultivated.
    Tiny pink flowers.
    Id please.

This is Cassia nodosa, I have propogated this plant by budding few years back at quram with by using Cassia fustula/amaltaj root stock.
Cassia nodosa grows very well in hot summer with full of flowers for more then 4 month with dark green foliage.

    Look at this link…toptropicals

is there a difference in the flowering stalks’ arrangement there and here???
    I am confused..
what’s the difference between cassia nodosa and cassia roxburghii
I mean i need the key in simple english, please
    does any one know?

Please check for the most distinguishing character of C .nodosa i.e. there are ten yellow stamens, the longest three having a round swelling in the middle. That is why the name nodosa. If it is positive then it is Cassia javanica ssp. nodosa ( as per theplantlist). C.nodosa is a synonym of C.j. ssp. n.

Your plant looks nearly – http://www.flickr.com/photos/jehane-ramola/5777336784/ and the pic in the link clearly shows nodes on three stamens as per key by …
But, it is interesting to note while “Bengal Plants”, FBI & FI inform that flowers of Cassia nodosa Ham, (Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa) are pink, FoC informs they are yellow – http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=242311362 !!!
According to FBI, no. of leaflets 6 to 12 pairs.

Some close ups taken today of the above Cassia.

Thank you for the latest update, which shows your plant is not C. nodosa of Flora Indica, vol2, page 336.

This is not C. javanica ssp. nodosa. Hence, this could be C. javanica  provided the other vegetative characters tally.

Adding one more picture with pods. Here it is. Taken on 22/7/2011.
Flowers are very tiny, not as big as Cassia javanica.
    Hope this picture helps.

    Thanks for a possible id.

Will leave it to the experts to validate.

    I guess correct ID !

I am not sure, C. roxburghii?

Ok, I will check for leaflet and anther details

Please post pictures of the individual flower showing stamens arrangement & leaf arrangement. I mean leaf showing no. of leaf lets, stipules etc. Pods as well  for the proper ID.

Also post habit picture (shrub or a tree)

It is big tree like C. javanica, sorry to say but I have no other images of this tree

Check Pradeep Kishen’s Trees of Delhi, where in the key for Cassia species have been provided.

Is any one has this book handy please share pictures of Cassia sp. key, i am very thankful to him.

Yes, appears close to images at Cassia roxburghiiDC.

Forwarding herewith the photocopy of the Cassia reference pages in Trees of Delhi.

This tree has been labelled as Cassia marginata at Lalbagh Botanical Gardens.
Though plantlist and tropicos say this is a synonym for Cassia roxburghii DC, both flowers look quite different.
Could you please help identify this tree?
    Date – 7-June-2011
    Location – Lalbagh Botanical Gardens
    Photos are by …

    Its cassia roxburghiiRed Cassia
The branches will look different from any other pink cassia variant, and the flowers raised above the leaf stalks

Cassia roxburghii for sure….flower stay on trees for long….

I am confused between two species that are supposed to be Cassia roxburghii.

In the first one, I see more orange shades. The stamens are yellow. The flowers range from yellowish-orange to orange to deep pink. The description in Blatter book for Cassia roxburghii matches this.
The second one has less variation in color. Mostly pink to deep-pink. The stamens are orange to light red.
Are these two different species or are both classified as Cassia roxburghii.

Yes Cassia marginata Roxb. now correctly known as Cassia wallichii DC. pink to rose flowers with longer filaments without swellings in the middle.

I am forwarding herewith a set of photographs of  a tree. Photographed in Chennai by a friend last week (22.10.23) and sent for ID. Please ID.

    Branches long and pendulous.

    Fabaceae  ??

Yes. I am also of the same opinion.

    I think Cassia species.

It does look like a pink Cassia. In view of the drooping branches and the slender, narrow stipules, it is likely to be Cassia roxburghii DC.

Cassia nodusa : 3 posts by 2 authors.

this plant was planted in-front of forest rest house Thekeddii. I think it is Cassia nodusa, please confirm id

It does look like it. Though do some people call it cassia nodosa?  copying a link. http://toptropicals.com/catalog/uid/Cassia_nodosa.htm
I have two shades of it. one is light pink and the other is dark pink. The dark pink looks very beautiful when the tree is in blossom. Both
of them when in blossom gives the impression of one huge pink garland. The tragedy with the dark pink is that it hardly produces any seeds
where as the light pink produces plenty of them. I wonder if any one has an answer.

    Thanks

Yes. For me also it is Cassia javanica ssp. nodosa (syn: Cassia nodosa Roxb.).

Important  identification character: There are ten yellow stamens, the longest three having a round swelling in the middle.

I would greatly appreciate it you could help me to identify the tree in the attached photo.. I have seen it flowering in a few areas in dehradun although it doesn’t seem to be common or native to this city…

from this distance it can be just guessed as
    Cassia renigera or cassia javanica
these are also called pink cassia.
a number of pink-flowered cassia are grown. but these two i found closest to your image

I think it should be Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa(Roxb.) K.Larsen & S.S.Larsen as per keys & images herein.

    Cassia javanicaL????

    Yes, I think so.

I think closer to Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa(Roxb.) K.Larsen & S.S.Larsen as per comparative images at Cassia

Thank you … Cassia nodosa Roxb. (synonym)

I think your tree is Cassia javanica ssp. agnes, whose accepted name isCassiaagnes (de Wit) Brenan
See the difference between the two subspecies of Cassia javanica here:
    http://www.efloras.org/florataxon.aspx?flora_id=2&taxon_id=242311360
In Cassia javanica ssp. agnes, flowers are borne in panicles at the end of leafy bracnhes. This feature is clearly visible in your pictures.
In Cassia javanica ssp. nodosa, flowers are borne in racemes on short side branches. You can see that here:
    http://www.flowersofindia.net/catalog/slides/Java%20Cassia.html

    Thanks, …,
But to me the first image gives the impression that it is Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa(Roxb.) K.Larsen & S.S.Larsen & not Cassia javanica ssp. agnes

    Could be some Phyllanthus ?

    Please post the habit picture.

Unfortunately, I have no other pics.

Perhaps Phyllanthus buxifolius, as earlier posted by …

This is not phyllanthus because in phyllanthus leaflets alternately arranged but here we have to see only opposite

For me  it is close to Cassia roxburghii not sure

    Seems you’re …

It appears to be cassia, but leaflets are different from those of Cassia roxburghii

Leaflets are close to those of Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa

    Cassia javanica

Please send the close up of the flowers showing floral details (Calyx, corolla, stamens and ovary) for proper identification. The photographs of ornamental Cassias are often deceptive.

I agree with … because based on this one picture I could not diagnose this as cassia javanica..
anatomy of the flower cluster is not that of any C. javanica I have seen ..

In this one picture (its very spectacular as a mom and pop picture, but gives only limited scientific information) …   the medallion like inflorescence reminds me of a yellow flowered cassia…  Cassia pentaphylla  … but that’s just form gross visual memory of a popular street trees from southern california…
I have not studied the taxonomy of it..
if this is a pink flowered cousin of c. pentaphylla  I’ll be very happy to know…
IS THERE A KEY TO CLASSIFYING CASSIA??? …..

Pradeep Kishen in his book ‘Trees of Delhi” has provided the keys to the common species of ornamental Cassias. You may refer to it. Nevertheless, many species of Cassias are being introduced, which look similar but when one looks into floral characters they differ. This particular species (un-identified) is one such example. Further more, many of the species (same) would slightly differ in the colour of the inflorescence depending on the localities (For e.g  Chennai species may look slightly different in Mysore). Thus creating further confusion. Meanwhile, I will try to  look out for the keys for the ornamental species.

    Cassia javanica

It may be Cassia nodosa, before final ID pleae check the leaves and other characters of both the cassia family trees.

I too think this is Cassia javanica of Leguminosae family.

Fabaceae-Caesalpinioideae (Caesalpiniaceae)– Cassia javanica-dark pink form:
I found this unusually dark flowered tree in Pinecrest (near Miami) Florida, USA a few years ago. One of these days I’d like to try grafting onto a suitable rootstock.
    http://i192.photobucket.fastfeat/Cassiajavanica_darkform1.jpg
    http://i192.photobucket.fastfeat/Cassiajavanica_darkform3.jpg
    http://i192.photobucket.fastfeat/Cassiajavanica_darkform2.jpg

why would it need to be grafted?
    what would be the advantage?
I somehow was under impression that cassias have a strong rootstock to begin with?
Dont know enough hort reasoning I guess.

The only way to secure the dark pink color would be to propagate it vegetatively. Cuttings are typically difficult to root, so grafting onto seedling rootstock would likely be more successful.
There’s a chance that seedlings could come true-to-form, but unlikely. And C. javanica seldom sets seed in the US anyway.

    –  Wow! Why the fillament of anther is swollen like a baloon of a dropper? Saw first time.

    – The synonym of the species is Cassia nodosa or Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa, a name given to it for the presence of this swelling on the anthers…

    /wp-content/uploads/2020/10/P1010973.jpg

    Cassia for ID : 310711 : AK-1:
Taken at Jijamata Udyan,Mumbai on 17/5/07.
It was a large tree with bunches of Pink flowers.
    Name given was Cassia grandiflora.
    Kindly id.

It may be Cassia grandis or i guess Cassia nodosa

Looking at flowers after downloading and magnifying, the stamens clearly have swellings on filaments. As such it should be Cassia nodosa, now known as Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa (Roxb.) K.Larsen & S.S.Larsen
    I am attaching cropped photograph

Now I see and remember this swollen filament… perhaps it was another thread… thank you very much…
we have several of these trees… they flower period starts in April and goes till about end of july… next year I will for sure keep and eye out for them…

Yes I too think that this is Cassia javanica subsp. nodosa (Roxb.) K.Larsen & S.S.Larsen of Leguminosae family.

It may be Cassia javanica L. as per keys herein as leaflets appear to be obtuse

    Date: 19 FEB 2017 … Altitude: ~ 906 m (2972 ft) asl
Cassia javanica L. … (family: Fabaceae) … exotic

Quite possible, … Thanks for validating the post. I labelled the photos based on placard !
Hopefully we get help with the ID.

It is difficult to confirm the ID based on these images.

Thanks …; I hope someone who has observed the tree during other times will recognize it. I have marked the post to … too.

The pod for me looks < 1ft, which means its Java Cassia
From the picture it looks like its next to the huge mysore fig
    link

For me 2nd image by …, is creating doubt.

    Thanks …
These trees (two of them) are planted on opposite side of the road that comes from one of the main gates.
Here is the approximate location where we would be able to see them.
Near one of the trees is a large tree of Duabanga.
Second image shows a branch with a leaf that is not yet shed, Otherwise much of both trees is bare.
The pod must be around a foot long, or slightly more.

Cassia javanica photographed from Lal Bagh Bangalore, 29-5-2015

    Was there a name plate?
I found leaflets different from those at Cassia javanica L., but Flora of China says leaflets apex acute, obtuse, or shortly acuminate and Flora of Pakistan says leaflets 10-20 pairs, 2.5-7 cm long, 1.5-3.5 cm wide, oblong, oval, rounded and blunt at the tip.

    Here it is

    Kandivali[w] is celebrating Cassia grandis!:
Cassia grandis is one of the first Pink Cassia to bloom & It is blooming in Kandivali for last 8 days. I think C.grandis is fairly rare in Mumbai and since we have an avenue of it in Mahavir Nagar [Kandivali, Mumbai], if any one is interested I can show these trees. … &  in this area we have an avenue of Cassia roxburgie, Kigellia pinnata, spathodea campnulata, adam, amaltas and Tabebuia! This is very unusual for N.Mumai!…..

Sharing some amazing pictures of Cassia grandis flowering in Kandivali, Mumbai

    – Earlier today, I saw another Cassia grandis in the premises of the Western Railways HQ in Churchgate [opposite platform no. 4]. It is flowering sparsely, not as well as the ones in Kandivali. It is laden with pods and several of them have split open on the tree itself. There are two more Cassia sp. with leafy stipules beside this tree and look forward to seeing them flower.

Trees of Bangalore – RA – Cassia grandis – Brazillian Cassia Tree:
Coral Shower Tree is native to tropical regions of America. Apparently originating in the Amazon, the species’ natural distribution cannot be accurately described.

It is a deciduous or semideciduous tree that grows up to 18 m in height and 50 cm d.b.h.
The trunk is straight and the spreading crown is high, irregular, and made up of dangling branches.
The leaves are paripinnate and made up of 10 to 20 pairs of oblong leaflets that are 3 to 6 cm long and rounded or obtuse at the apex and base.
Cassia grandis is used as an ornamental to beautify streets, avenues, parks, and gardens.
The sweet tasting and bad smelling pulp of the fruit is edible and is used as a laxative. The wood is hard and heavy; it is used in rural areas for home construction, sheds, and structures for roofs and in cabinet- making.
The pink to purple flowers turn salmon-color with time and are arranged in racemes. The species blooms in spring, and fruits (legumes) ripen in summer.

It’s one f d most splendid tree wen in bloom.

Yes for confirmation of these pink flowered Cassia species you need close up of flower to see swellings (present or not), stipules and leaf hairiness to differentiate.

yes please tell us, …, where is this tree?
We have some in Belur, across the river from Calcutta in a garden, there too some guards guard these trees very well…
SO what’s with this tree that on the west coast of India and here on the east coast of India they guard this tree and its surrounding so well?

yes, good set of photos with minute characters

And I think it z Cassia javanica subsp. renigera.

Cassia renigera has longer filaments swollen in the middle, not seen in above flowers. In addition C. renigera has large reniform stipules almost 2.5 cm broad, whereas C. grandis has minute stipules not larger than 2 mm. Although leaf base is not clearly seen, but stipules appear to be much smaller like Cassia grandis.

Requesting identification of this pink cassia.
    Is this Cassia javanica ?

This is Cassia grandis. The pods are dehiscent.

    Cassia grandis

    yes Cassia grandis

Thank you all! Could someone please tell me the key feature by which this was confirmed as ‘grandis’ ? I searched on net but it was difficult for me to find the key which will help me to differentiate between various species of pink cassia.

The thick, woody pods are immediately indicative of Cassia grandis as against the slender, cylindrical pods of some other pink cassias. The immature leaflets of this tree are of a characteristic coppery colour, some of which can be seen in your second pic. The flowers of this tree lack the three swollen yellow stamens of C. javanica etc. If you take a close look at the flower, one of the petals will have a yellow base (not evident in your photos).

An avenue tree of small to medium size, Is it  Gliricidia maculata?
    Prantik, March 17, 2009

Certainly not Gliricidia maculata, can we have bigger pictures? closeups may be. I think it’s carambola.

Links for Averrhoa carambola inflorescence, if it helps:
    http://www.ars.usda.gov/images/AVERRHOAFLOWER.jpg,
    http://www.mytho-fleurs.com/Averrhoa_carambola.jpg &
    http://www.hear.org/starr-030523-0076.jpg

gliricidia is very light purple, almost white.

It is neither Gliricidia nor Averrhoa. In my opinion it is pink
cassia. Here is a link of a variety of pink cassia but of a lighter
colour. I have both the varieties at my farm in Wayanad in Kerala.
    http://www.redbubble.com/people/rainy/art/2619976-2-pink-cassia

    I agree with …
It’s Cassia javanica (Java cassia, Pink shower tree, Pink Lady, Appleblossom Shower) – though there are many varieties in it.
See the link for lots of pictures: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Cassia%20Javanica&w=all&s=int

Definitely appears to be one variety of Pink cassia.

These two images appears close to images of Cassia grandis

Cassia fistula – Indian Laburnum from Dombivli:
Cassia fistula planted by me ten years ago in a school compound.  It is the flowering season lasting upto June.
This tree is a native of  India. It sheds its leaves during March and in April bursts into a mass of long, yellow golden flowers. The fruit is a long pipe like liked by monkeys. The tree is the host plant for the caterpillars of yellow butterflies.

We in Delhi will have to wait for another 20 to 30 days for this to flower. Once it flowers, it is treat to eyes.

The butterfly is emigrant if I am not mistaken.

Agreed. It is the food plant of the Common Emigrant.

its a veritable storehouse of medicinal properties…. esp the black pulp around the small seeds in the seedpod… in bengal the black stick like pod is called Bandor-lathi……lathi for a monkey… as you say liked by the monkeys, though Calcutta hardly has any free roaming monkey left…
I call these types of trees Value added trees for street or Urban plantings….
My parents planted many such in our neighborhood in Calcutta, many of whom survive, yet many have been cut down by our city pragmatists to widen roads…   etc…  in recent times it has become somewhat popular in Calcutta streets..

    VALMIKI : OBSERVER OF NATURE:
Forwarding the image of a plant KARNIKARA ( as mentioned by Valmiki in his Ramayan ). In most of the botanical literature the scientific name of KARNIKAR is Pterospermum acerifolium. In Ayurvedic literature ( Shibkali Bhattacharya ) there is another candidate for KARNIKARA, and this one is Cassia fistula. Valmiki’s description of KARNIKAR fits with Cassia fistula. In case of doubt please refer Kiskindha Kand(pratham sarg) Shlka no 21.

A cool thing to soothe the eyes in hot summers, this one and Delonix regia (Gulmohar) steal the show in May and June…

May i request you to add Peltophorum pterocarpum and Lagerstroemia speciosa in yorur list 🙂

Definitely … these two also deserve special mention, the reason behind my not mentioning them being there low frequency in our area compared to Gulmohar and Amaltas..

Thank you once again Sir, here we have more Gulmohar and Copper pod than Amaltas and Jarool.

Hi – query on Amaltas_Cassia Fistula: You can recollect me from the below mail chain. I have been anxiously waiting for my tree to blossom yellow this May. Last May it was small. But so far it din’t. Will you be able to throw some light please? Is May not the month for yellow blossom in Hyderabad unlike Delhi ?
Sorry if I am bothering you. Attaching two latest pics of my tree.

Have explained this in the past but am not able to reproduce the link here

Here is the link: It’s very easy to find a particular thread by opening home page at link (keep it in your Favourites & you needn’t have to ‘sign in’ to it) & searching on Gulmohar Tree + … Once thread is open, copy & paste the address.

You are right, my Amaltas (Cassia Fistula) is planted in centre of a lawn. I am not sure as to how I will handle this.. but what I get from you is that I should not water the area around this tree so that it blossoms yellow.

Do I still have time? Can I right now stop watering the surroundings and still be lucky to see yellow blossom in the next few days?

It is now left to the elements. If the monsoons set in, as I presume it will this week in Hyderabad, you will have to wait another year to see your tree blossom.

    Look like Cassia fistula

The tree has not flowered as yet and has hardly grown in size. Attaching fresh pics of leaves

    Leaves are 7cms in length

All responses favour to Cassia fistula to which I also agree.
There is an interesting observation heard from many of my friends from Pune about this tree planted as ornamental.
The tree is very difficult to survive when planted as ornamental for first few years ..say even 5-6 years. The leaves shrink. It looks unhealthy as if it is going to die. Suddenly in one season it starts growing fast and in a year or so attains a good height and starts flowering profusely. I think similar is the case here and you are waiting for it to flower.

True this tree is looking unhealthy infact when I posted the last pics of the leaves I felt they look so dry and lifeless was feeling a bit disturbed about it. But now with this information I look forward to its blooming.

Yes Cassia fistula, the Indian laburnum, commonly known as Amaltas

Some times back I had uploaded both this as well as the real Laburnum, Laburnum anagyroides

This could be a sapling of Cassia fistula.

Requesting to please provide ID confirmation of the attached Cassia fistula captured in Hiranandani Heritage Gardens, Powai, Mumbai in January 2013.
ID provided by … in the follwoing post consisting 2 different pics of 2 different trees, so there is some confusion….
    efi thread
…, Have I marked the right pic against the right ID?

The pictures do not show the leaf phyllotaxy clearly.
Cassia fistula will have big compound leaves with opposite leaflets which might be the case here.
Leaves of Sterculia guttata will be simple alternate, spiral and clustered at twig ends.
    Biotik

There can be no doubt that it is difficult to identify the trees from these photographs. However, a certain similarity can be seen in my photographs attached here. They were taken on my property at Shahapur.
My photographs of both flowering & fruiting are also available in the archives of this group, but am not reproducing them here since they are not relevant now.

Agree with … This is Cassia fistula [Bahava, Amaltas], the Indian Laburnum.

Thank you … I thought so but had my doubts since the new tender foliage isn’t drooping. May be its a wild natural variety so..

Dear friends from Goa, … would like to get the local name “balo” in Devanagari script – name of Cassia fistula L.

i would be happy to type it up… but .. is hindi the vernacular of Goa or is it Marathi…
    name:
is it balo as in b only
    not BAAA lo
and when one pronounces balo… is L the harsh L or is is it gujaratis and marathis also have rl lr as in baval which is a soft rl sound
    please tell me
make a sound file and send it as mp3 i think its allowed in google groups

… my difficulty was not knowing how the word is pronounced. Therefore posted the query.
English transcribed word “balo” does not help people understand how it is actually pronounced.
All of the following listed transcribe as balo:
    1. बलो
    2. बालो
    3. बलॉ
    4. बळो
    5. बाळो
    6. बळॉ
Coincidentally, one of my cousins got help from her group in facebook, and it turns out to be बालो.
The meaning of बालो is gajra in Marathi, Hindi …
The name does makes sense when we visualize the the pendulous inflorescence of Cassia fistula.
Thank you very much Usha di for your response.

thanks for the clarification and your diligence
so its hard L and BAAA

    … not hard L … is soft L. (is hard L)

well, my understanding is different… i may be wrong…
    લ versus ળ in gujarati
    pronounced hard versus soft respectively
just heard pronouncing marathi alphabets in utube

    Let’s Learn Marathi – Alphabets – Mulakshare – मुळाक्षरे  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_0YSwM3kUs
ळ definitely sounded soft to my ears
linguistics/ science may be classifying it differently
my knowledge is: phonetically it sounds soft
    may be that’s the difference
and I have never come across equivalent of ળ ळ in bangla
    learning never ends

so tell me about hard and soft differences

Apologies …, my understanding about linguistics is limited.

I would say: in Marathi (and Hindi) is soft L … just as you discussed earlier … as in baval which is a soft rl sound.

not to labor this point but I just cant resist it …
baval in gujarati at least is બાવળ
where the l is soft pronounced… sounds like you are saying it half-heartedlty… sort of lingering sound…
    not બાવલ

where the L is definitely complete and hard sound

Not sure how બાવળ is pronounced in Gujarati.

Please find how sounds in कमल OR जल

    बाळो
    ballo is pronounce as follows
    ‘ba’ as in bath
    ‘ll’ as in english culled
    ‘o’ pronounced as awe

    hope this was useful

    Thanks …,

It is interesting to get variances of pronunciation for the word balo – local name in Goa for Cassia fistula.

Many thanks to … for providing the name in Devanagari, and also for the elaboration to help understand the pronunciation.

Konkani name for Cassia fistula in Goan Konkani is Bhalo

    Thank you very much …

    Cassia fistula?/ABDEC38 : 2 posts by 2 authors. Attachments (3)

On a drive to the lower town, I spotted several specimens of this tree, mostly young, which I took to be Cassia fistula or Amaltas. A local man who I consulted said that it had yellow flowers in spring and was known as Kaniyar in the local dialect. The Kaniar I know is the Bauhinia purpurea, which this tree is definitely not. But then local names can, and often do differ. The person did not recognise the name Amaltas either but said that any parts of the tree were not edible (poisonous he said). Please advise.

IN SEARCH OF SCIENTIFIC IDENTITY OF KARNIKAR : 2 posts by 2 authors. 1 correct image.
During 1981-1984 I was at Pachmarhi. My friend Prabhat Kumar used to stay at a cottage called Bedi Banglow. On the right side of the entry to that house there used to be a big tree with large sweet scented flowers.

To find out the identity of this tree I consulted books in the library of AEC Training college and centre ( this library is having rich collection of books on all subjects). D V Cowen’s Flowering Trees and Shrubs of India (sixth edition, 1984) has hand drawn picture of the flower with leaves, and as per that book the scientific name of KARNIKAR is Pterospermum acerifolium. For me it became the Scientific identity of KARNIKAR, till the time My friend Prof. Suhas Majumdar of Presidency College, Kolkata told me that the description of KARNIKAR by Kalidas does not match with Pterospermum acerifolium (while walking on the bank of the Ganges near Mangal Pande Ghat, I showed him the tree which I knew as KARNIKAR. He told me that tree was MUCHKUNDA (in Bangla), and started reciting from Kalidas and told me that MUCHKUNDA can not be KARNIKAR). So my search started. I referred many books but according to all of them KARNIKAR IS Pterospermum acerifolium. I me Dr S K Jain of Botanical Survey of India, in his office at Lucknow and discussed the subject with him.He told me that a botanist may not be that keen to know the sanskrit name of a particular species. While going through a book by Shibkali Bhattacharya (title of the book, CHIRANJIB BANOUSHADHI), I found him stating Cassia fistula as KARNIKAR. I brought it to the notice of Prof Majumdar and wanted to know whether this tree fits into the description of KARNIKAR by Kalidas. His answer was affirmative. Now i had two scientific names for KARNIKAR. In 1994 I was going through a translated version of Valmiki Ramayan and found mention of KARNIKAR along with some 140 or so distinct names of plants. I got interested and bought Valmiki Ramayan (Gita Press, Gorakhpur). In that book I found an excellent description of KARNIKAR (Kishkindha Kand, Pratham Sarg, Shlok 21). He says, ” look at the KARNIKAR in full bloom, they are looking as if a man in golden ornaments and putting on yellow garments.” Such a good observer was poet Valmiki. For me the identity of KARNIKAR is settled. It is Cassia fistula. Attaching one image of Cassia fistula and an image of Pterospermum acerifolium. Reader can draw his own conclusion.

    Very intersting
But did not tell us why you started with the word “karnikar”
Cassia fistula flowers are not scented ..
and I agree with you, Karnikar is most likely Cassia fistula as per Kalidas ‘s writings and Ramayana
but in Aryurvedic leterature such as Bhavprakash Nghantu there is no doubt is cassia fistula/ amaltas

This is such an inspiring story of a citizen naturalist ‘s painstaking inquiry into id of trees named in ancient Sanskrt literature

    Cassia fistula, Amaltas ABJUN01/04 : 2 posts by 2 authors. 4 images.

I just arrived back from Delhi and apart from the searing heat one of the highlights of my trip was the flowering Amaltas trees in public parks. Of course we have our own here too spreading on hills at lower altitude but I haven’t got pictures of the local trees. Here are some from Delhi taken in the last couple of days.

Amaltas seeds are spread by jackals and bears in the wild (Pradip Krishen, Trees of Delhi) and we have both these animals here in the himalayas.

yes they are flowering here too in the lower ganges delta

though I always thought they were (seeds, I mean) were spread by monkeys and hence bengali name is Banorlathi (banor= bunder , lathi = stick) for the stick like long black (when mature) seed pods with the somewhat sweetish pulp

    important medicine for humans too.

Though widely cultivated in Mumbai, this tree is uncommon in Madh and was absent in the published enumeration of the flora of Madh by Santapau & Shah (1969).

Photographed on the 15th of June 2015.

i thought monkeys spread the seeds may be so if there are migrating monkeys !!
