Aracaceae, Araceae & Zingiberaceae Fortnight 1-14Aug14: THANK YOU : 1 post by 1 author.
Throughout her history India faced famine time and again. Perhaps Bengal, the undivided greater Bengal of British and pre-British era, suffered the most. There was great-Bengal-famine in 1770 wiping out 1/3 rd of population and there was famine of 1943 on which Satyajit Ray directed the film ASHANI-SANKET. We have literatures, paintings on Bengal Famine. One story goes with a mother who wanted to survive by eating three or four entire gram-seeds she found in the fecal matter of her dead son, suffering from starvation and acute enteritis. When there is no irrigation system, when people are left with no strength to plough their land, when there isn’t any single seed left for sowing what people can do! Long before KALE MEGHA our poet penned ALLAH MYAGH DE, ALLAH PAANI DE.
I am here because, Araceae, perhaps the most adaptive family, helped my ancestors survive those days.

Araceae, Arecaceae and Zingiberaceae Fortnight: August 1 to 14, 2014 : 9 posts by 3 authors.
Our next monthly Fortnight would cover Araceae, Arecaceae and Zingiberaceae from August 1 to 14, 2014. Members are requested to kindly organise their photographs for upload during the Fortnight.
Hope this proves to be another successful Fortnight. The following genera of Araceae already discussed in efloraofindia (one can see the species & their details under them by clicking on these links): …………….
Species & genera pages of Araceae in efloraofindia are now with images.
It involves inserting images on around 115 species pages (say around 350 images) & 34 genera pages. It also involved a lot of cleansing work like deletion of duplicate / wrong pages, correctly identify some of the threads, putting them at their proper place, proper formatting of the species pages etc. Lot of pages were already done by Bhagyashri ji.
I request our members to pl. take up one family each & try to make efloraofindia more constructive. We will be rendering what ever assistance is required by the members, in this matter.
